When visiting an Arab home your host is likely to say to you Ya hala bik. 5-Salam – السَلَامْ. This is the short version of ‘Assalamu Alaikum’. Salam means Peace, The word “salam” is mentioned almost 33 times in the Holy Quran. A Salam is one of the names of the Great Allah which means “Peace”.
Allah prescribed the salaam for Adam (peace be upon him) and his descendants until the Hour begins. In fact the greeting of the believers will continue to be salaam even after they enter Paradise. Praise be to Allah. It is not permissible to greet a Muslim by saying “peace be upon the one who follows true guidance”, because the Messenger only used this greeting when he wrote to non-Muslims. When you greet your Muslim brother you should say to him, al-salaamu ‘alaykum (peace be upon him).
